Position Title: Social Worker
Job Responsibilities: Patient Care and Other
Education/Training: Social Work
About Me/My interests: I am a social worker who qualified through UNISA (University of South Africa) in 2004. Just after qualifying I worked at an adult hospice and was intrigued by the work done with dying people. This however was not a permanent position.
I then went on to get a permanent position working at a physical rehabilitation unit where I worked with patients, and their families, who had suffered either a brain or spinal injury of some form. My role was to counsel the patient and or families, as well as to facilitate family meetings for feedback from the multidisciplinary team. I also assisted with planning for a safe discharge.
My passion has always being with children and I loved the work I was able to do at the hospice and so when a social work position was created in the Paediatric Oncology Unit at the Witwatersrand Donald Gordon Medical Centre, I jumped at the opportunity.
It was a half day position and I worked in both the paediatric oncology unit and the physical rehabilitation unit for some time, until a half day position opened at CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa.
Whilst employed by CHOC I am based at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital in the Paediatric Haematology and Oncology clinic and ward.
We have established our own Palliative Care Team within our unit and work closely with and are guided by The Big Shoes Foundation.
We have a dedicated multidisciplinary team that aim for cure whenever possible and comfort and dignity when not.
Training Opportunities: Yes
